How to clean your home for allergy season

With the seasons changing it’s tempting to open up a window and let the warm breeze enter our home. But the spring breeze also brings pollen and dust into your home, and if you have environmental allergies, letting these allergens pile up in your home isn’t going to do you any favours. Here are our professional cleaning tips to help you prevent itchy eyes and sneezing fits this spring.

Prepping for pollen

Before you start cleaning your home, we highly recommend protecting your eyes, skin, and face to prevent any potential allergy triggers. Most allergies are triggered by breathing in dust particles or other allergens. Having protective gear that covers your nose and mouth while you clean is important. Here are some protective items you can wear to prevent allergies while you clean. Dust mask- having a scarf, face mask or some form of fabric material tied around your nose and mouth can lessen the chances of breathing in allergens. Rubber gloves- whether or not you have allergies, we highly recommend you always wear gloves when you clean. Cleaning products often use strong chemicals that may irritate your skin. Full-length clothing- covering up as much skin as possible prevents dust and cleaning products from getting in contact with your skin.

Efficient dusting techniques and tools

From your wall fixtures, ceilings and floors, dust can get everywhere! Therefore, you need a way to ensure your dusting is simple and effective in removing dust. Microfibre cloths If you’re wiping down surfaces, microfibre cloths make the best dusters. Dust is attracted to the fibres and clings onto the cloth. This way, you won’t be wiping over the same area numerous times or worry about transferring the dust onto other surfaces of your home. Vacuum regularly While sweeping can be an effective form of cleaning your floors, there’s a high possibility of your broom unsettling the dust on the surface. Vacuuming does a better job of sucking up the dirt and dust on the ground. Think about investing in a small-particle or HEPA filter for your vacuum. These filters are specifically designed to trap the small pollen and dust particles. If you don’t own a vacuum, we suggest using an anti-static broom. Dusting Carpets If you have a carpeted home or have rooms with carpets, regular carpet cleaning is a must! You should be vacuuming all carpeted areas of your home at least four times a week. This might sound excessive, but dust easily gets trapped in carpets and gets moved around with foot traffic. If your carpets aren’t attached to your floor, roll them up, take them outside, and give them a good dusting. Otherwise, use an appropriate brush attachment for your vacuum to pick up any accumulated dust. Ceiling fans If you suffer from allergies, you know ceiling fans are one of the most dreaded tasks. Ceiling fans accumulate a lot of dust and can be tricky to clean. A simple way to clean your fan, without knocking the dust around, is by using an old damp cloth. Cover the blade and proceed to slide it across the fan. Change bedsheets and pillowcases regularly You might feel like your sheets are still clean after a week, but in reality, your sheets can trigger your allergies quite quickly. Dust, dead skin cells, and other small particles can be inhaled while you sleep, causing you to wake up with a sneezing fit. The best way to clean your bed linen is to wash your sheets and pillowcases in hot water to kill dust mites and bacteria.
